Apathy is our own worst enemy. How can people, just like you and me, shuffle through life, blind to the poverty and violence that plague our world? Ahh I make myself sick sometimes.
I understand it's easy to forget about the wider community. It's easy to self-isolate in this busy busy age. We have futures to think of, responsibilities to tend to, people to care for. Then of course we have our own happiness to nurture. But, we cannot leave the rest of the world hanging now, can we?
As a middle-class teenager raised in the suburbs, it's hard for me to comprehend...even an ounce of the hardship that other people have experienced. Yeah, I don't get it. It doesn't affect my daily life. So what? That doesn't mean I can't care. That SHOULD NOT prevent you or me or anyone from doing what we can.
I cry buckets in movies like Hotel Rwanda and Blood Diamond, then I resolve to make a difference in the world. But school is always lurking, work comes along, clubs, sports, friends...When do I have time to save the world? When does anyone? That's why we need to make time. Change doesn't come just because we want it. We have to make an effort and a commitment. Otherwise, everything is just rhetoric.
