PROJECT: Memphis

Vision
Poverty in America is an issue often overlooked. Because grappling with domestic poverty requires a serious reevaluation of traditional values and lifestyles, too many prefer to side-step the problem. However, ignoring the situation now cannot change the future.

Goals

1) Educational Resources
In schools around the nation, SAT and ACT scores are essential determinants in admissions and perhaps more importantly, scholarship distribution. Project: Memphis will provide prep books and classes to inner-city students who would otherwise lack access to such resources. Classes will be administered by qualified students and teachers who are willing to volunteer their time and effort, thus giving an opportunity for the entire community to become involved. Books will be mainly collected from large-scale book drives in local schools and supplemented by donations.

2) Expression and Awareness
In addition, inner-city children often lack the opportunity and resources to express themselves creatively. The Project: Memphis plan strives to provide them with outlets for expression by publishing their personal artwork, photography, poetry and prose in a collection of works from their perspectives. Donations will allow Project: Memphis to supply students with necessary materials (art supplies, cameras, etc.) to capture the moments of inspiration and passion in their lives. Furthermore, the collection will be an eye-opening window into the ironic world of the impoverished in this “land of plenty.”
